Wise utilization of internet

Evidently the current generation students rely on online sources and social media for all that is possibly available using the internet. This could turn in to a habit, which would be difficult to control, when goes out of one’s hand. The catch here is that, one should know how to use internet to their benefit and make the most of it.
The practice of just googling the given assignment topic and copy-pasting the obtained information from a couple of different websites is in place because these students do not have the basic understanding of how to do research. There are times when the students haven’t read anything about the topic and have no idea of what they copied or wrote down to submit. Many, even today, think that these research works are done by scientists or scholars but they try with less than bare minimum efforts to do the research by themselves. Instead, they are ready to browse online about various topics which would be completely unrelated to their work or progress. When the researched information is read thoroughly, it might come to use when they least expect it.

Browsing subjects which are informative and helps the students in developing their knowledge frame should be encouraged as it is also a form of learning, whereas the time spent online must be cut down to as less as possible. The other set of distractions are the numerous social media apps that have been developed. Unrealistic views of other person’s life, peer pressure, negative content, bullying, disrupted sleeping patterns, and the long list continues. It is mostly the teens who are falling prey for the traps set up by the social media such as following a trend, having the fear of missing out (FOMO), trolls, and habitual chatting. Unnecessarily time is being wasted on non-productive tasks which could be instead used to complete certain work, learn a new hobby, or even to give some rest to the body.

On the brighter side, social media is also allowing these same teens to create their online identities, communities, communicate with others and build their social networks. The networks that they build provides them with support, especially helping those who experience exclusion or have disabilities or chronic illnesses. It is seen that individuals also find their safe spaces through the help of net. Teens also use social media for entertainment and self-expression. These platforms expose teens to current events, news, allow them to interact across geographic barriers and teach them about a variety of subjects. Humorous content, peers, genuine connections, and a wide social network might even help teens avoid depression and anxiety.

Using internet to research, communicate, look for information about the career choices, learn new subjects through distance education, creating more job opportunities, using digital libraries, and using to as a money making machine is all a skill that one has to learn so that not only the present time is utilized to its best but they will have learnt something which is beneficial for the future.
