There is no one way here

Were you told just to read and learn any topic? If that is the case, then you have been robbed of all the fun that you could possibly have had while learning. There is no necessity or a rule that you can learn or understand only if you read it a greater number of times. That’s when the VARK model comes to the rescue and this model works differently to every individual on different levels. Neil Fleming, a teacher by profession, came up with this model of learning that involves the core learning styles of Visual, Auditory, Reading and Writing, and Kinesthetic learning methods.

To explain better, these 4 methods help a student to comprehend any topic in the manner that they are most comfortable with. What seems to be easy for one student maybe difficult for the other one, so, to make the learning process easier, this model can be used according to the students’ capability. Learning styles are nothing but the way an individual takes in, understands, expresses, and remembers the information.

  • AUDITORY – Also referred to as ‘aural’ method, is the learning style wherein the individual takes in the information by listening. The lectures are of the utmost importance for this type of learners. This can be included with reading out aloud, discussing, and explaining to the topic to others. The vocal collaboration helps them receive the information as they are paying aural attention.

  • READ and WRITE – Individuals who fall under this group, learn through reading and writing materials like texts, worksheets, notes, and presentations.  They re-write when they read and this makes them retain the learning that has done because they use the language, they are comfortable in making it handy for future reference.

  • KINESTHETIC – The ‘hands-on-lab technique’ makes the students’ learning easier as they are physically active while they are learning. These individuals mostly do good in scientific studies because they have their senses activated throughout the process. Associating the information to the senses such as touch, smell, sound, taste, and sight is the process that is helping the students take in the taught concepts.

Now that we know there is no one singe way of learning, trying out the VARK model and figuring out what suits the best for you is the initial step in learning. Do you know what kind of learning method you have been using?
