We are expected to do English exercises that focus on vocabulary and grammar in school taught English education, but ignore the most important parts of a language like- human interaction, cultural aspects, emotions.
How does the English literature help the students?
Learning grammar and vocabulary may contribute to making good sentence while speaking but it does not itself help in learning the language. So it is important for the education system to implement English literature in the syllabus as it helps the students to understand the complexity of the words and weightage of the sentences which helps them in learning the language. English literature also helps the students to understand the evolution of the English language. English literature not only helps to broaden the perspective of the students but also helps in extending their knowledge and changes their thinking capability. Literature helps the students in every aspect of learning the language rather than the school taught English.
How to improve in English?
Language is a skill, and skills improve with practice. Learning English consists of two parts; Spoken English and Written English. The common element in both of these is vocabulary; you can improve it by learning one new word and its meaning daily. If you come across any word that you do not understand, find out its meaning and you have learnt a new word. Another simple step would be to read English daily and the reading doesn’t have to be academic. You can read the newspaper, magazines, stories, whatever interests you. The next step is to incorporate the new words you learn, the structure of sentences, and the flow of ideas in your writing which will improve your Written English. Spoken English improves by beginning to converse in English. Listen to podcasts or news in the English language while paying attention to the pronunciation of words and the structure of the sentence. As the famous proverb “Little drops of water make the mighty ocean”, small daily steps will improve your English Skills.
